A Bluetooth Product Type is determined by the Core Configuration supported. The Product Type is not the category or description of the Member's product; instead, it reflects the layers supported in the design. The Product Type of Design is selected on the Project Basics step in the Qualification Process with Required Testing in Launch Studio.
Product Type | Definition |
End Product | Supports, at a minimum, a complete Core Architecture with the corresponding Controller and Host Core Configurations and optionally Protocols/Services/Profiles outside the Core Specification. |
Controller Subsystem | Supports "half" of the Core Architecture with corresponding Controller Core Configuration. Controller Subsystems must eventually be combined with a complementary Host Subsystem to create a complete Bluetooth solution (e.g., Tablet + Operating System, etc.). |

Profile Subsystem | Supports, at a minimum, all the mandatory requirements defined in one or more of the Protocol, Service, or Profile Specifications. |
Component | Supports, at a minimum, all the mandatory requirements for one or more layers in the Core Specification and/or Protocol, Service, or Profile Specifications. A Component is intended to be integrated to create a new End Product or Subsystem. A Design that requires or allows for further integration (e.g., modifications to circuitry, layout, PCB) to create the appropriate design for a product should be qualified as a Component. |
Bluetooth SIG cannot advise a member what product type they should choose as it varies from one Member to another.
Step-by-step information on how to qualify can be found in the Start Guide here or by visiting our Qualify Your Product web page.
Product types are listed in the current PRD 2.3 in section 2.1 that can be downloaded here.
